Mens Sports Watches An Evolution

About the time of the First World War gentlemen carried pocket watches, wrist watches were made for women and considered women’s jewelry. It was the Generals of the Armies of that time that saw the need for a time piece to be carried by their soldiers that was more accessible than a pocket watch. It had to be easily accessible, convenient and durable. This created the evolution of the wrist watch for men and the three major areas or categories of Mens Sports Watches that we see today.

With the demand by professionals for Sports Watches, plus the fact that Mens Sports Watches have become a fashion statement; has created an increase in demand for these items. Watch Manufacturers seeing an opportunity have entered this market and created higher levels of competition. This has brought forth many innovations in design, materials and technology to meet the requirements of their demanding customers. Styles can vary from the simple round clock face with bold numbers and three hands to a chronograph with a GPS unit built in. But in all there are still three main categories that the majority of Mens Sports Watches fall.

These three areas came from the three areas of operation of the Armed Forces; The Air Force, The Army or ground Force, and The Navy. As we look at the wide variety of Professional Sports Watches we can see the design requirements that have defined the three categories. Although any watch can be used in any of the three areas, the professional requires a design that will give him the utmost accuracy and reliability for the rigors of his field.

Pilots and Aviators require their time pieces to be able to withstand the rapid transition from ground level to high altitudes with low pressure and temperatures, without fogging or loss of accuracy of time. The mariner or Diver on the other hand works in an environment that is highly corrosive, wet and sometimes have to descend depths under high pressure that could cause his watch to implode or leak creating a dangerous situation. Racing Drivers on the other hand expect their watches to operate in cold or hot conditions with constant vibrations, take a banging and keep accurate lap and stage times.

There other areas were professional sports men demand time pieces of high quality, accuracy, and durability. They will also have a feature that is peculiar to their sport and will not be found on other watches. In general though, it is the men in our society whether professionals, amateurs, or just those who desire a rugged dependable time piece that drive the category of Mens Sports Watches.
